Adult children of alcoholic/substance abusers
My experience and training as a Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor, combined with years of family systems training, has prepared me with a unique understanding of the dynamics that occur in families as a result of substance abuse. Growing up with parents who had substance use issues can continue to powerfully affect our experiences and relationships as adults. Therapy can provide a space to better understand the impact of these experiences as well as to minimize their effect on choices, feelings, relationships and parenting style as adults.
Childhood Anxiety
All of us experience some degree of anxiety- this is also true for children. Although some level of anxiety is a natural part of living and does not require treatment, when anxiety begins to impact on a child’s ability to engage in and enjoy age appropriate activities it may be time to seek help. Left untreated, anxiety can cause children to miss out on important learning and social experiences contributing to the development of social and academic difficulties, substance abuse, physical illness and depression. There are evidenced-based treatments to help children and families manage childhood anxiety. In addition to working with children individually, I also help parents learn to respond to their child’s anxiety in helpful ways.
College Students and Young Adults
Young adulthood is a time of complex personal, emotional and social change. Many young adults experience high levels of stress and anxiety as they face changes in multiple life areas including relationships, living situations, educational demands and vocational pursuits. Psychotherapy can help to build skills to better manage the stress of these rapid changes and to successfully navigate the demands of adult life. Therapy during this phase of life offers an unparalleled opportunity to clarify personal values and to begin to independently envision and create desired lives.
Positive Psychology for Families
Positive Psychology focuses on what is right in our lives-the things that have been scientifically shown to contribute to our well-being. Research shows that there are things we can do to bring more happiness into our lives and the lives of our children and families. Using scientifically demonstrated ways to improve happiness and resilience, I have developed a program that helps parents to access strengths to create desired lives for you and your family. I use evidence-based approaches to help parents improve the happiness of their family and teach their children skills, habits and ways of living that can improve their happiness for a lifetime.
Although appropriate for all families this approach can be tailored to the unique experiences of:
- Expecting parents
- New parents
- Single parenting
- Co-parenting
- Adoptive parenting issues
- Inter-racial families
- Parents of children with special needs
Parenting Anxious Children
I have been trained at the Yale University Child Development Center in an innovative, evidence-based treatment program (SPACE: Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions ) designed to teach parents how to systematically respond to their anxious children in helpful ways. Research has shown that this approach which provides support to parents- can reduce children’s anxiety as effectively as providing Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) to children.
