Parenting
Therapy for parents – my individualized approach
Parents are their children’s best and most important teachers. It is through their relationship with their parents, that children learn to understand themselves, others and the world around them. Despite the importance of these early relationships, there are few opportunities for parents to step back from their day-to-day parenting struggles, and to consciously and proactively explore their values and goals for their family. When as parents we can become more conscious of what we would like our experiences as a family to be, we can then develop strategies to bring our parenting behavior in line with these values. Because no two families are alike, I work with parents in a highly individualized way that is sensitive to their unique family culture, goals and values.
Specializing in:
Positive Psychology for Families
Positive Psychology focuses on what is right in our lives-the things that have been scientifically shown to contribute to our well-being. Research shows that there are things we can do to bring more happiness into our lives and the lives of our children and families. Using scientifically demonstrated ways to improve happiness and resilience, I have developed a program that helps parents to access strengths to create desired lives for you and your family.
I use evidence-based approaches to help parents improve the happiness of their family and teach their children skills, habits and ways of living that can improve their happiness for a lifetime.
Although appropriate for all families this approach can be tailored to the unique experiences of:
- Expecting parents
- New parents
- Single parents
- Co-parents
- Adoptive parents
- Inter-racial families
- Parents of children with special needs
Parenting Anxious Children
I have been trained at the Yale University Child Development Center in an innovative, evidence-based program (SPACE: Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions ) designed to teach parents how to systematically respond to their anxious children in helpful ways. Research has shown that this approach which provides support to parents- can reduce children’s anxiety as effectively as providing Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) to children.
